Hello my fellow foodie adventurers!

Today’s quest is a smoky triumph: Smoked Lasagna! Aw, my true love. Italian food! you can’t go wrong with melty, cheesy lasagna. You’ll love the big, yummy twist this recipe brings with a smoky edge you’d never expect. Since we just got our new Traeger pellet smoker, I’ve been smoking everything, and the flavor it imparts to everyday dishes is unbelievable. You haven’t lived until you’ve tried smoked hot dogs! But I digress—this lasagna was a game-changer. Picture this: zesty marinara sauce layered with oven-ready noodles, ricotta cheese, fresh spinach, mozzarella, and a savory mix of browned ground beef and Italian sausage, all melded into a melty, smoked masterpiece that’ll leave you speechless (mostly because you’re stuffing your face). Ready to wield your smoker and claim this treasure?

Ingredients You’ll Need (Quest Inventory)

  • ½ lb. ground beef (the hearty champion)
  • ½ lb. Italian sausage (the savory ally)
  • 9 oz. oven-ready lasagna noodles (the sturdy scrolls)
  • 24 oz. marinara sauce Rao’s Marinara Pasta Sauce (the zesty tide)
  • 1 cup fresh basil, chopped (fragrant banners)
  • 2 cups baby spinach (verdant leaves)
  • 15 oz. ricotta cheese (the creamy mantle)
  • 1 lb. mozzarella cheese, shredded (molten treasure)
  • ½ cup Parmesan cheese, grated (golden dust)
  • 1 egg (the binding elixir)
  • 2 tsp garlic powder (the bold essence)
  • 1 tsp salt (the seasoning rune)
  • ¼ tsp black pepper (a shadow kiss)

How to Forge the Feast (Quest Steps)

  • Brown the Champions: In a large skillet over medium heat, brown the ½ lb. ground beef and ½ lb. Italian sausage, breaking them up with a spoon. Cook for 6-8 minutes until fully cooked and crumbly. Drain excess fat if needed.
  • Mix the Tide: Stir 24 oz. marinara sauce into the browned meat—mix well and set aside, your zesty base is ready.
  • Craft the Mantle: In a medium bowl, combine 15 oz. ricotta cheese, half the 1 lb. shredded mozzarella (about ½ lb.), ½ cup Parmesan, 1 egg, 1 cup chopped fresh basil, 2 tsp garlic powder, 1 tsp salt, and ¼ tsp black pepper—blend into a creamy, seasoned filling.
  • Layer the Base: Spread ½ cup of the meat sauce in the bottom of a 9×13-inch baking dish. Lay 3 oven-ready lasagna noodles over it as your foundation.
  • Build the Layers: Top the noodles with 1 cup meat sauce, ¾ cup of the cheese mixture, a handful of 2 cups baby spinach, and ¼ cup mozzarella—repeat this layering for 3 more layers, using all the noodles (about 12 total).
  • Seal the Crown: For the final layer, ensure all noodles are completely covered with the remaining meat sauce and a generous layer of mozzarella—seal in the smoky goodness.
  • Smoke the Magic: Place the uncovered lasagna in the Traeger pellet smoker at 200°F for 15 minutes to infuse it with a gentle smoky flavor.
  • Bake to Glory: Cover the lasagna with foil, increase the smoker temperature to 450°F, and cook for 40 minutes.
  • Unveil the Treasure: Remove the foil and cook for another 20 minutes, allowing the cheese to brown and soak up that smoky essence.
  • Rest the Feast: Let the lasagna rest for 15 minutes before serving.

Tips Tricks & Tasty Variations

This Smoked Lasagna is an Italian classic reborn, but every Kitchen Quest hero needs a few clever moves and twists to master the craft. Here’s how to wield your skills and remix this dish like a true flavor bard!

Cooking Tricks:

  • Smoker Hack: Add wood chips like hickory or apple for extra smoky depth—enhances the Traeger magic!
  • Noodle Prep: Soak oven-ready noodles in warm water for 5 minutes if they seem dry—ensures even cooking.
  • Cheese Melt: Cover with foil for the first 40 minutes to prevent the cheese from over-browning—unveil for that golden finish.
  • Rest Boost: Tent with foil during the 15-minute rest—keeps it warm and helps it set.

Tasty Variations:

    • Spicy Skirmish: Add a pinch of red pepper flakes to the meat sauce—ignite a fiercer flame for the bold!
    • Veggie Vault: Mix in sautéed mushrooms or zucchini with the spinach—extra loot for your layers.
    • Cheese Quest: Swap mozzarella for provolone or add ricotta dollops—new molten banners to wave proudly!
    • Sauce Twist: Use a spicy arrabbiata sauce instead of marinara—shifts the tide to a fiery realm!
    • Protein Pact: Trade beef and sausage for ground turkey or Italian meatballs—a different champion to wield the smoky crown!
